Before answering this, the big question is why do we lose focus? One of the biggest reasons why we can lose focus is that we never had clarity in the first place. We never had something that kept our attention long enough in our business to focus in on. And as Tony Robbins once said, ‘Clarity leads to power’.
When you are clear, you can focus. And when you are clear on something that’s meaningful enough, the intensity of your focus will increase. So let’s explore five things on how to get get and how to stay focused as a business owner…
1) Set Clear Goals
The first one is to set clear goals. Take the time to step back from your business and ask yourself:
- Where am I trying to take my business?
- Why am I trying to take it to this place?
- How am I going to take it there?
Once you have answered these questions, get super clear on your goals. What are your key goals for the next 12 months and three years? They key is to only have a few. Not a lot of goals, just a few goals that when you achieve them, will mean a lot to you and your business. So set clear goals.
2) Set a Plan
When you’ve got your goals clear, your next pathway is to set a plan. Think of your plan as a plan of attack to achieve your goals. Your plan is simply needs to have the strategic and tactical things to execute on that will lead you towards your goal. Once you are clear on your goals, and you have your plan, your plan should be driving you towards those goals. Your goals provide the direction, and your plan is how to get there.
3) Put a Value on the Tasks in Your Plan
When you set a plan, you’re going to have key things in your plan that you should be working on in order to achieve your goals. At Biznostics , we call this working ‘ON’ your business and is something every business owner should do. Once you have a clear plan in place, you know what you should be working on.
Now, to keep focused on these, the important next step is put a value on each of the tasks in your plan. What is each of those tasks worth to you? You see, we focus on what we value. When you place a value on your tasks, you will focus on them. Something of value will always get done. Be really clear on the value in terms of financial and / or time benefit it will bring you
4) Put the Important Things in Your Diary
Your next step is put these important things into your diary. Whether you use an electronic or physical diary, make sure you set aside time to actually do them. As you put the tasks in your diary, actually put the value next to each task. That way, when other things come up in your business, and you’re tempted to be distracted with whatever those other things are, look at the value that you’ve placed against that task. When you can see how valuable it is, will you now be distracted? Will you lose focus? It is unlikely, that you’re going to lose focus, because that thing has value assigned to it, and it’s set aside in your diary.
5) Stay Focused by Asking the Question
Finally, and this is a critical step as our overall results are shaped by the individual decisions we make in each moment. Ask the question. When something is about to take you away from what you should be doing, ask this question.
Is what just came up more valuable than what I was supposed to be doing in my plan?
And if it is more valuable well then go and do it. But most of the time it is likely to be less valuable than the activities you have planned that are going to help you reach your goals.
So just to recap, to stay focused as a business owner:
- Set clear goals.
- Create a plan of attack to achieve your goals.
- Put a value on each of the items in your plan.
- Put the tasks into your calendar and assign value to them in your calendar.
- When distractions come up that are going to take you away from your plan, ask the question.
By doing these steps, it will help you stay focused as a business owner and reach your goals faster.
